Mabel Elizabeth Johnson, affectionately known as "Sister," was born to the late Jannie Mae Robinson and Harvey Jordan Sr. on Dec. 8, 1928, in St. Marys, Ga. She was the second oldest just behind her late brother, Harvey Jordan Jr.
She departed this life Oct. 5, 2024, at her home in the presence of her loving family. She became affiliated with First African Baptist Church at a very young age as part of the Jordan family. She fondly recalls reciting a poem in the annual Christmas play. Sister was the eldest of her sisters, and was very loving and caring toward so many in the family and the community. She attended high school in Camden County.
After high school, Sister decided to leave Georgia and move to New Jersey to live with her younger sister, Deloris "Aunt Lola" Sullivan, and her husband, Lewis Sullivan Sr., who was stationed in the U.S. Army at Fort Dix, N.J. While living in Trenton, N.J., she met and married the love of her life, the late Allen C. Johnson, known as "AC," on June 4, 1954. Their union was blessed with six lovely children: Lynne E. Myers, the late Allen C. Johnson, Carolyn L. Collins (Sonny), the late Susan L. Johnson, Jacqueline M. Johnson, and the youngest Gregory G. Johnson (Robin). In New Jersey, Sister was active in the Eastern Star, the Mount Zion AME Church of Trenton, and a member of her local union. She later retired from the Mercer County Geriatric Center as a certified nurse assistant and returned to St. Marys to live with and care for her mother, the late Jannie Mae Robinson. Sister was a proud mother who blossomed into a wonderful grandmother.
She leaves to mourn her loving sister, Deloris Sullivan; loving brothers, Robert Lee Jordan and James Jordan, all of St. Marys, Ga.; numerous grandchildren, Ajamu Myers, Mikeya Kennedy, Kwamaine Johnson, Curtis Johnson, Ato Johnson, Wrenaldo Johnson, William Johnson, Terrence Johnson, Tyler Johnson, Matthew Johnson and Paige Johnson; and a host of great grandchildren who she adored. She also leaves a host of many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
"We lost a mother with a heart of gold, and how much we mist her could never be told. She raised us with love and helped us along. If we follow her footsteps, we'll never go wrong." – The Broken Chain
